Freeze dried ice cream is soft when bitten into and more brittle and rigid than regular ice cream. Although 98% of the original water content has been removed, it does not taste 'dry' but has a nice soft taste. Pick your favorite flavor and enjoy this space age food.
What's in each packet
Each packet contains 19 grams of the selected flavor.
Freeze drying, or lyophilization, removes water from the ice cream by lowering the air pressure to a point where ice shifts from a solid to a gas. The ice cream is placed in a vacuum chamber and frozen until the water crystallizes. The air pressure is lowered, creating a vacuum, forcing air out of the chamber; next heat is applied, vaporizing the ice; finally, a freezing coil traps the vaporized water.
Freeze-dried foods were developed so that foods could be sent on long-duration spaceflights, as to the Moon, and to reduce the weight of the water and oxygen normally found in food.
The manufacturer processes foods with peanuts and tree nuts at their facility, although your selected flavor may not include those as an ingredient, be advised that all products from the manufacturer may contain traces of peanuts or tree nuts.
Ready to Eat
This freeze dried ice cream does not require refrigeration, it can be opened and eaten right away.
It has up to a 3 year shelf life but once opened, that shelf life diminishes quickly due to absorption of moisture in the air.
The inner layer of packaging may have a slit in it- this is a normal result of the packaging process and will not affect the shelf life or great taste of the product.
